Bay Creek Railway Excursions
With the anticipated arrival of its first Interurban Car in the summer of 2007, the Bay Creek Railway will inaugurate its Interurban Passenger and Dining Service. The first to arrive will be the Dining Interurban Car circa 1912 and restored to that period style and elegance.
In the beginning, the Dining Interurban Car, which seats 30 people, will operate Friday and Saturday nights between Cape Charles and Exmore. The round trip will take approximately 2-1/2 hours and will feature “fine” dining catered by the Aqua Restaurant.
In addition to the scheduled dining excursions, there will also be themed pleasure trips such as: pizza trains, wine tasting excursions, and chartered trips for clubs and groups.
Also, with the arrival of our Passenger Interurban, we will begin our Passenger Excursion Service that will operate Thursday through Sunday on a relaxing 45- minute ride from Cape Charles to Cobbs Station and return.
Bay Coast Railroad
The Bay Coast Railroad (BCR), formerly the Eastern Shore Railroad, is a Virginia shortline railroad operating over the former PRR line from Pocomoke City, MD to Norfolk, VA, a distance of 96 miles. This north-south route on the Delmarva Peninsula consists of 70-miles of mainline track and a 26-mile carfloat operation across the Chesapeake Bay from Cape Charles, VA to Little Creek, VA.
The floating operation is the unique aspect of the railroad. Today, there are only two railcar floating operations still in existence east of the Mississippi River, the other is in New York, and our 26-mile trip is by far the longest floating operation.
The carfloat, the “NANDUA”, was constructed in 1948 by the Pennsylvania Railroad and is 410 feet long and 50 feet wide with 4 tracks and will handle 20 to 25 rail cars depending on their weight. The round trip across the Chesapeake Bay takes twelve hours which includes loading and unloading at both Cape Charles and Little Creek.
